SEEING AI AS A TOOL FOR INCLUSION IN GRADUATE STUDIES: exploring benefits and challenges in accessibility for students with visual impairmentAbstract
Digital Information and Communication Technologies (DICT) have introduced new ways of interaction and access to knowledge, creating new pedagogical opportunities and enhancing individuals' autonomy. Assistive Technology (AT), an interdisciplinary field focused on identifying resources and services that improve the participation of people with disabilities or reduced mobility, should be integrated into education to maximize its benefits. This research article aims to demonstrate how the use of assistive technologies, specifically Microsoft's Seeing AI app, can help with access, retention, and specialized educational support for visually impaired students in graduate programs. Using a descriptive approach, the study presents and analyzes the functionalities of Seeing AI, discussing its applications in the academic context. Key findings indicate that this tool can facilitate text reading and navigation in environments, providing practical support to students. However, limitations related to accuracy in academic settings and the need for a stable internet connection are also highlighted. The information provided may serve as a basis for other institutions seeking to implement assistive technologies, promoting more effective inclusion for visually impaired students in the challenging environment of graduate education.
