Developing proficiency in Geographic Information System (GIS) software is essential to the initial training and professional practice of geographers, strengthening the integration between science and technology and helping to address the shortage of qualified professionals in both public and private sectors. In this context, this article analyzes the experience of a mini-course held during the XXIII Geography Week at the Universidade Estadual Paulista (UNESP), Presidente Prudente campus, focused on the use of QGIS software in geographic education and research, with the aim of analysing how the creation of technical and artistic maps can contribute to teaching, research, and the critical and creative development of students. The methodology adopted was based on lectures and practical activities, organized in stages ranging from the presentation of the software to the creation of maps by the participants. The results highlight the relevance of maps as teaching tools and planning instruments, as well as the potential of QGIS for teaching and geographic research. In addition, the integration promoted by the mini-course between technical and creative practices contributes to critical thinking and fosters the development of students’ skills, promoting collective learning and enabling them to explore QGIS for academic and professional purposes.
